Crafting a Query:

What is it?

Let’s say that you have written the synopsis of your novel following the checklist below.

Now you are ready to write your query letter. First, let’s dive in and figure out what a query letter is and how and why to write one.

According to Kara Gebhart Uhl in “Crafting a Query” in Guide to Literary Agents (2021),“A query is a short, professional way of introducing yourself to an agent”(2021, p 15). It is a quick way for you to pitch your book.

If an agent is intrigued by your query, he or she may ask for partial (perhaps the first three chapters of your manuscript) or the entire piece.

Organization

  • Introduction
  • Pitch
  • Bio
  • Thanks

Introduction

  • Sum your book up in one sentence
  • Tell what you have written, including title, genre, and length.
  • Address “…not only to a specific agency but to a specific agent within that agency” (Uhl, Kara Gebhart, 2021, p 16).
  • Make the letter personal – make a relationship – State/explain how your book matches

NOTE: Research how you connect with that agent personally. Find out what they have represented. Look for books represented similar to yours.

Pitch

  • Sell your manuscript in 3 to 10 sentences
  • Use active words
  • Make sure your description shows what makes your story interesting and unique

NOTE: Do not leave your description sounding like your story is already out there.

Bio

  • Focus on Previously published works (fiction credits)
  • Mention your publications in bigger magazines or well-known literary journals
  • State any awards (related to your work)
  • State if you have earned a Masters in fine arts in writing, but not English or journalism.
  • State any writing groups you are part of  (it can aid in publicity or networking)

Note: Any substantial credibility in the industry will help you sell this book.

Thanks

  • “Thank the agent for taking the time to read your query and consider your manuscript” (Uhl, Kara Gebhart, 2021, p 18).
  • Ask if you may send more in any format desired (Uhl, Kara Gebhart, 2021, p 18): partial or full.

WAY2WRITING started as little pieces of thought coming together hoping to provide content and support on the writer's journey. It is more than a one man show originally organized by a writer named Tierra Hopkins, also known as T.J. Hopkins. WAY2WRITING wouldn't be anything without its community of writers. Thank you for being here. We are on this journey together.
